Having great skin is about more than just great skin care products. If your diet isn’t right, if you’re not moving your body enough, even if your mental health is not in great shape, then that’s all likely going to show up on your skin. But sexual wellness might be a free (and fun) contributor to getting your glow on – so why aren’t more skincare brands pushing this agenda?
Studies have shown that sexual encounters (with a partner or on our own) have long-term skin benefits beyond causing that immediate glow. Self-pleasure can lead to a release of oxytocin, which lowers cortisol levels, leads to better sleep, and helps the skin repair itself.
We speak to Erika Schwass, Science and Wellness Manager for clean-beauty brand Consonant Wellness, about:
- The science behind how our sexual release can improve our skin health by releasing estrogen, oxytocin, and other skin-enhancing hormones.
- How we can overcome the stigma of self-pleasure.
- Surprising facts: The anatomy of the female clitoris wasn’t fully discovered until the 2000s.
- Consonant skincare’s new “Come and Glow” kit.
